The Club welcome players of all levels from the seasoned campaigner to those new to the sport.
The current team draws together a diverse mix of players all committed to Rugby. Whilst most players identify as being gay there are a number of players who identify as being straight. The team’s attitude is that they are a Rugby club that happens to be predominantly gay as opposed to a Gay Rugby Club.
The Convicts 1 team is coached by Bronnie Macdonald, who has been involved with the club since April 2008. “Each player’s enthusiasm and commitment sees them continuing to achieve results both on the field and in their personal lives too. The fact that I am female and that members of the team identify as being gay is incidental, our focus remains on our game” Bronnie said.
The Club takes great pleasure and pride in seeing players take to the field for the first time and march off the field more confident in themselves and their abilities. “In many cases, the path to becoming an openly gay rugby player has not been smooth, all of our players show great personal character and fortitude each time they take the field” said Charlie Winn, President of the Sydney Convicts.
